Our Mission

We Aim to Build a Better World

Stanly Peer & Recovery (SPARE) was established in 2023 in response to the urgent need for recovery services among individuals detained in the Stanly County Detention Center. Many of those incarcerated were experiencing forced withdrawal from substance use without access to the resources necessary to support lasting recovery upon release. Recognizing this gap, peer support specialists from various agencies came together to form a workgroup focused on creating recovery support opportunities within the detention center.

In collaboration with the Stanly County Health Department and the Stanly County Sheriff's Office, the group launched a pilot project that brought peer-led recovery groups into the facility twice a week. From this grassroots beginning, SPARE has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, now extending recovery support both within the detention center and throughout the broader community.
